Emily gets a handle

HELLO
Hey, welcome, it’s nice to be here with you. This is a newsletter where I explore themes of permission and attention through my experience in the world and the romantic comedy genre.
WICKED!! The movie!! I loved it. I went with my bestie S. We went at 2pm because I turn into a pumpkin if I’m out of my house past 8pm and that movie is looong. The colors, the sets, the acting, the costumes, the SILLINESS. I did not want to blink for I wanted to fully absorb every moment. After each song, in that moment where we would have clapped as an audience of the stage production, I tapped my hands together oh so quietly to get my grateful energy out. What is the etiquette of these things?? I stayed until the very end of the credits. A couple of high schoolers walking past me on their way out of the theater looked askance as I doubled over laughing when I saw the spelling of Pfannee. My joy cannot be contained.
As smarty-pants Princess Weekes says in her video “Sympathy for the Villains”, “The witch as a figure has come to represent fear of feminine power, fear of female independence and sapphic relationships, the denouncement of the patriarchy.”
Ok so Jeff Goldblum = incompetent patriarchy.
Elphaba = feminine power and independence.
As for sapphic relationships I invite you to recall the 2002 film Bend It Like Bekham and consider…
WICKED BEND IT LIKE BEKHAM
Elphaba : Fiyero : Galinda = Jess : Joe : Jules
One more witchy thought connecting Wicked to the TV show Agatha All Along (which I also loved)…
Princess Weekes says that Agatha’s “backstory makes it clear that her desire for power are at odds with the constraint of a coven and when that happens she will choose power…[Agatha] is essentially a machiavellian who has and would choose power over other people.”2
OOP! I see you Galindaaaaa. You did that! You chose power over other people!
THE LUNCH LINE
Ding Dong! Call my lunch line where I will share something I ate for lunch last month. I love hearing what you ate for lunch if you’d like to leave me a voicemail.
